Indian Dalits

Indian caste system is in compliance with the Indian constitution done away with. Nevertheless it continues to exist despite all political and social pressure. It is deeply rooted in people’s minds, even in the minds of those who suffer from it most. The untouchables, in India referred to as Dalits, still make the rock bottom of the Indian social scale. To find out more on the issue, I went repeatedly to India between 2003 and 2011. Granted invaluable support from several human rights organisations , I could witness and photo document the situation of Dalits in Gujarat, Rajastan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Especially my three-months stay in Danapur, Bihar, between 2010 and 2011 offered me a first hand insight into the daily life of the Dalit communities.
